Carolyn Nursey was presented with an award from The Turner’s Trust for her long-standing domestic service to a family in Long Riston by Town Mayor, Linda Johnson, at an awards ceremony in The Guildhall on January 16th. Carolyn was accompanied by Rev Fran Rhys who encouraged her to apply.

The Turner’s Trust is a Beverley charity which was set up by Matthew Turner, a printer and philanthropist, who gave his name to Turner’s Yard off Saturday Market. Upon his death in 1853, he bequeathed money to be held in Trust for ladies who had lived in as domestic servants for a single family for 10 years or more, with that family living within 8 miles of the Guildhall. The Charity Commission has since allowed the Trust to change the criteria for the awards, in that they are now open to men as well as women, the length of service is for a minimum of 4 years and there is no requirement to live in BUT the place of service must still be within 8 miles of the Guildhall. The Trustees include the Mayor of Beverley and the Vicars of The Minster and St Mary’s, with the Mayor having the honour of making the presentations. Â
