On Sunday 2nd October 2022 a celebration service was held at Toll Gavel United Church to commemorate the 50 years Jubilee of the founding of The United Reformed Church nationally.
In 1972 the United Reformed and Presbyterian churches in England joined together to form the United Reformed Church. More locally, the United Reformed Church which was situated on Lairgate, closed in 1979 and the congregation joined Toll Gavel Methodist Church. This is where the name Toll Gavel United Church came about.
The main difference between the Methodist and United Reformed churches is in their organisation. The United Reformed Church believes in more local decision making – ‘the gathered church’, whereas the Methodist Church includes more national networking. Many Methodist and United Reformed churches – including ours – have formed partnerships and respected each others traditions.
